Expert "Online Strategies for Local Broadcasters" to address Saga, concert streaming, and more

Friday, August 31, 2012 - 12:05pm

Editor's note: RAIN will return Tuesday, September 4. Have a great long weekend!

We have to credit Seneca County Radio president & CEO Keith Hodkinson (whose webcast was a finalist in the 2011 RAIN Internet Radio Awards for "Best Overall Strategy") with the idea of a Summit panel that addresses the unique streaming and Internet challenges of the local broadcaster. While we let Keith's words gel in our heads, news broke that broadcaster Saga Communications had not only decided to shut down some of its local streams, but later announced its plans to abandon ad-insertion efforts.

Undoubtedly, the local station or group faces issues that national broadcasters and online-only webcasters don't. There are simply different financial realities for streaming content that's geared mostly to a local audience, and most local operators are still wrestling with how best to serve their markets online.

So, we're happy to announce that new media vet and head of CBS Radio Dallas Dan Halyburton will moderate the "Online Strategies for Local Broadcasters" panel at RAIN Summit Dallas, coming up Tuesday September 18th, just before the RAB NAB Radio Show. He and Emmis Digital VP Angie May Cook are two broadcasters making streaming work on the local level -- along with support from professionals like Triton Digital's VP/Director of Sales NA, Streaming Division Stephanie Donovan (top right), TargetSpot VP/Publisher Development Elizabeth Pardieu, and Radiate Media GM/Affiliate Relations Dave Van Dyke (lower right). They'll all join (previously announced) Susie Hedrick of Marketron and Barry Leffler of Chapelboro.com for an insightful discussion for the local broadcaster.

It's knowDigital Senior Research Analyst Kelly Ellis who'll present the update on her company's "Successful Streaming Audio Brands" research, shortly before the keynote address (more here) from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment President of National Sales, Marketing & Partnerships Tim Castelli (left). Our afternoon's program also features RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson's "State of the Industry" address, and the presentation of the third-annual RAIN Internet Radio Awards (we invite you to take a look and listen to the finalists, here).

You can see the full RAIN Summit Dallas agenda, with a complete rundown of panel topics and speakers, and registration information, here.

(We'd also like to remind you about our inaugural RAIN Summit Europe, coming up October 5th in Berlin. You can find more details on that, and links to register, here.)

RAIN Summit Dallas expert panelists to examine "Social Radio" and "Monetizing Mobile"

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 - 1:00pm

Don't get stuck standing in the back (or worse, out in the hallway!). We want you in comfortably seated in a chair at the Dallas Hilton Anatole September 18th for RAIN Summit Dallas. To ensure this, of course, secure your spot now (in all seriousness, our September events in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. all became SRO affairs).

Please visit the RAIN Summit Dallas page for registration info, links and more.

Each September we partner with the RAB NAB Radio Show and produce a half-day educational and networking event (modeled after our annual April RAIN Summit West). One of the most eagerly-anticipated topics we'll cover is the "social" applications for Internet radio: song sharing, music recommendations, listening rooms, and more. The "Social Radio" panel will be moderated by Triton Digital VP/Business Strategy, Applications & Services Division Jim Kerr. Manolo Espinosa (right), who is SoundCloud's Head of Audio (SoundCloud is a social audio platform where users create audio and share it) and Jelli founder and CEO Mike Dougherty (Jelli is a service for broadcasters which allows listeners to instantly affect what they're hearing using Internet social tools) will contribute, as will Clear Channel Media + Entertainment's iHeartRadio Network SVP Owen Grover and Myxer founder Myk Willis.

To engage the important topic of Monetizing Mobile listening, we're happy to welcome Spotify's Midwest Regional VP Brian Berner (left). Leading the conversation about this ever-growing audience segment (and how to profit from it) is Inside Radio Senior Editor Paul Heine. We also welcome Pandora's Kim Luegers, CBS Local's Neil Salvage, Kevin Straley from TuneIn, and Cox Media Group's Jeffrey Ulrich.

The afternoon culminates with the keynote address (more here) from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment President of National Sales, Marketing & Partnerships Tim Castelli (right), RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson's "State of the Industry" address, and the presentation of the third-annual RAIN Internet Radio Awards.

You can see the full RAIN Summit Dallas agenda, with a complete rundown of panel topics and speakers, here.

The Radio Show is currently offering a special two-for-one discount if you plan to attend both the Radio Show and RAIN Summit Dallas. Just register for the Radio Show (here), and make sure you select the "Radio Show/RAIN Summit Two-for-One Discount" option. See you in Dallas!

(We'd also like to remind you about our inaugural RAIN Summit Europe, coming up October 5th in Berlin. You can find more details on that, and links to register, here.)

Six panels, more than 30 expert speakers, and RAIN Internet Radio Awards to highlight our Dallas event

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 - 2:15pm

As we approach the sell-out point for our September 18th RAIN Summit Dallas, the time to secure your space is now.

If our past few September events (Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C.) are any indication, space will be at a premium, and we can't even guarantee that there'll be standing-room-only admissions still available on September 18th. So, if you haven't yet, we'd like to invite you to visit the RAIN Summit Dallas page and register now (and make sure you secure your hotel and flight, too!).

(We'd also like to remind you about our inaugural RAIN Summit Europe, coming up October 5th in Berlin. You can find more details on that, and links to register, here.)

Each September we hold a half-day educational and networking event in conjunction with the RAB NAB Radio Show. This year, we'll be at Dallas' Hilton Anatole. We'll begin at noon, and our first panel, "Innovating Online Content," will show how much more you can do with your stream beyond simulcasting. Our expert speakers include Slacker's SVP/Strategic Devlopment Jack Isquith (left) and Edison Research Exec VP/Music & Prog. Sean Ross (who'll moderate). Joining them on the panel is Michael Hill (Radioplayer), Bob Kempf (NPR), and Cory Smith (ESPNRadio).

We'll immediately follow with another panel, this one "Identifying Opportunities for Advertisers in Internet Radio." If you want to learn about advertisers and ad agencies using Net radio effectively, we've assembled an all-star cast of experts (with the help of Triton Digital Pandora, Katz360 and Targetspot): TBS Promotions VP Karen Cuskey (right), Group Media Director at The Richards Group Shannon Haydel, Snr. AE at JWT Lee Triggs, and Group M National Radio Supervisor Taylor Wood. And a superb panel like this truly deserves a moderator like the IAB's Michael Theodore.

These are just two of the panels which will lead up to our keynote address (more here) from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment President of National Sales, Marketing & Partnerships Tim Castelli (left), RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson's "State of the Industry" address, and the presentation of the third-annual RAIN Internet Radio Awards.

We've recently published full RAIN Summit Dallas agenda, with a complete rundown of panel topics and speakers,  here.
