7digital to license access to DMCA-compliant streaming, 25M licensed tracks to U.S. webcasters

London-based 7digital is releasing its "DMCA-compliant" music streaming platform to would-be U.S. webcasters. Turntable.fm's Piki service (more in RAIN here) is already using the 7digital service to stream.

7digital provides its digital music store and other related services to consumer electronics companies like Samsung and music services like Turntable.fm.

The company's streaming radio API is meant to make it easy to launch an Internet radio service that adheres to the restrictions of the U.S. law known as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. (The law limits the ways in which "non-interactive" services can present and make music available to consumers.) The streaming API also affords access to 7digital's full catalog of more than 25 million tracks of licensed music.

7digital thinks there's real appeal to consumers and a growing market for curated, "non-interactive, DMCA-compliant" services -- that is, Internet radio.

The company's president for North America Vickie Nauman told TechCrunch, "It's such a great lean-back experience and we’ve been watching the marketplace and we feel that the partners that we have that are doing really well, combined with the need people have for a really easy way to listen to their music have led us to decide that this year we're really going to focus on radio."

RAIN Summit EuropeDozens of top radio and online audio executives from across Europe will be converging in Belgium in less than six weeks for the second annual RAIN Summit Europe, to be held on Thursday, May 23rd at the stylish Hotel BLOOM! in Brussels.

As with other RAIN Summit events such as last week's successful RAIN Summit West in Las Vegas (more coverage here and here), web radio professionals will gather to discuss all facets of Internet radio and online audio, participating in panel discussions and presentations and advancing the development of the business of online audio across Europe.

Topics on the agenda will range from business to technology to programming and include best practices for measurement of online audio, multiplatform content distribution, mobile streaming, sales strategies, and programming for audience growth.

Mobile app combines 13 million song online library with listener's local tracks to create custom streams

Thought this looked cool: an Android mobile app called Magic Radio that creates custom streams of music that combines 7Digital's 13 million-song library with the listener's local collection and playlists.

The app, made by a company called Double Twist, uses music intelligence from The Echo Nest to create the streams, which can be further customized by the user. Note that when music from the listener's local collection is part of the stream, there's savings in both data usage/bandwidth, and royalty obligation (since the user already possesses a copy of the music, it isn't being "publicly performed.")
