RAIN 5/31: Pandora, Clear Channel continue growth in April as Slacker recovers

Web radio leaders Pandora and Clear Channel continued their growth in April,according to Triton Digital's newly-released April Webcast Metrics.

Their increases helped push the overall AAS (Average Active Sessions, essentially equivalent to AQH) of the Top 20 webcasters to nearly 1.7 million in the Domestic Mon-Sun 6a-12m daypart. That's a gain of 79% year-over-year. Almost all of that growth is thanks to Pandora and Clear Channel, both of which have grown more than 100% year-over-year (Pandora AAS up more than 675,000, Clear Channel up nearly 90,000).

Pandora grew 4% month-to-month (an increase of more than 48,000), reaching an AAS of nearly 1.2 million. The webcaster is up 131% year-over-year and up 18% since January 2012.
The #2-ranked Clear Channel reached an AAS of 171,803 in April, up 2% month-to-month. It has grown 108% year-over-year. 
The largest month-to-month percentage growth came from #4-ranked Slacker, with an increase of 19% over March to reach an AAS of 47,480. That's more or less a recovery to where Slacker stood in January. The webcaster is up 59% year-over-year.
Other relatively strong growth came from Hubbard (up 10% to reach a new record-high AAS of 5,219) and Univision (up 6%). Most other broadcasters were flat or declined slightly (including the #3-ranked CBS Radio, down 1%).

Mary Meeker's annual "Internet Trends" report is out, and it appears the sun is shining on mobile (including revenue). Meeker, of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, every year reports on the Internet's global population and key trends. You can see the slides from yesterday's presentation of the report at the D10 conference here.

Mobile now accouts for 10% of Internet traffic, according to the report, up from 1% in December of 2009. "And with this growth comes cash," writes The Washington Post, "with mobile monetization 'growing rapidly'... And when it comes to getting the biggest bang for your advertising buck, the Web — particularly mobile — is where advertisers should turn." 

Of note, global shipments of Android phones have grown four times faster than iPhones over the past 13 quarters. And as much as we like to focus on smartphones (there are 953 million smartphone subscriptions), it's still a "feature phone" world, with 6.1 billion subscriptions worldwide.

Also interesting: 29% of U.S. adults own a tablet. Sales of Apple's iPad are growing at three times the pace of the Apple iPhone.

Among the top 10% of mobile data users, 80% of them are sucking up that bandwidth with an Apple iPhone, says a new report. Focusing on smartphone owners in the 70th percentile and above when it comes to data usage, it's more than three times as likely they own an iPhone than the next most "data-hungry" group of users, Android-on-HTC device owners.

Meanwhile, according to online ad network Chitika, Apple's share of all U.S. smartphone traffic is now 72%; its share of tablet traffic is a staggering 95%.

So, why is it Apple mobile users seem to be using so much more data? Not only are there far more Android devices out there than iPhones, many Android devices are now 4G-enabled (which would intuitively result in more data usage), while Apple's only 4G device is its new iPad in the U.S. (This study, by the way, was done by research firm Analysys Mason, which tracked mobile usage of smartphone users in the U.s. and several European countries.)

TheNextWeb writes, "it’s quite surprising that very heavy data users are sporting an iPhone, suggesting the rich media experience Apple has presented to users is proving to be a hit."
