Intel, Emmis and iBiquity are developing an HD radio-equipped smartphone

Editor's note: RAIN will return Tuesday, 10/11.

Intel, Emmis Interactive and iBiquity are reportedly developing a smartphone equipped with HD radio.

The companies hope to demo the device at the NAB Show in spring 2012. Inside Radio reports, "if a [mobile] carrier likes what it sees, it's possible the handset could be in stores by the end of 2012."

Pandora in-car usage is up 75% over 2010In Q3 2011, 11 million people listened to Pandora in their cars, according to data from MagnaGlobal's Media Access Quarterly. That's up from 6.3 million in 2010 (around 75% growth).

By comparison, MagnaGlobal reports Sirius XM had 19 million in-car subscribers in Q3 (up from 18 million; around 6% growth).

Two factors may have contributed to Pandora's growth, says MagnaGlobal: (1) more than 90% of cars now have auxiliary input jacks, perfect for hooking up smartphones, and (2) there are now over 100 million smartphones in the U.S.

CBS Interactive Music Group has acquired Vancouver-based online song lyrics aggregator MetroLyrics.com, the most-trafficked lyrics site on the Internet. Indeed, the CBS Interactive Music Group logo now prominently appears on the web site's footer. MetroLyrics' database contains lyrics to more than 700,000 songs,

MetroLyrics.com

and the site generates nearly 12 million unique users a month in the United States (according to comScore).

Lyrics websites (some very deservedly) carry a reputation as storehouses of unlicensed copyright material and malware. But as TechVibes writes (here), "MetroLyrics was the first lyrics dedicated site in the world to provide its users with a fully licensed database of complete and accurate song lyrics, ensuring artists, songwriters and music publishers are properly compensated for the use of their copyrighted work."
